Interim Director of Pharmacy
The Interim Director is responsible for all pharmacy operations in the assigned facility. These operations include, but are not limited to director of pharmacy operations and other duties as required. This individual is responsible through their activities for supporting and promoting Cardinal Health Clinical Technologies and Services to the client. The Interim Director maintains licensure in states that are selected by CTS Management based on the current and projected needs of the department. The Interim Manager supervises pharmacy personnel at the client hospital when acting as pharmacy manager. Principal Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ability to travel at least 90% of the time.
  • Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions and respond quickly to emergency requests.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
  • Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of the client (includes pharmacy management of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, acute care, psychiatric, oncology, obstetric, chemically dependent, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients).
  • Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate and safe drug use.
  • Develops and/or maintains a medical staff approved formulary.
  • Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.
  • Provides for the educational needs of client (healthcare workers, physicians, patients).
  • Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals.
  • Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
  • Assures direction and documentation of controlled substances; meets or exceeds state and federal requirements.
  • Maintains ongoing contact with client and Cardinal Management through direct contact or telephone contact.
  • Ensures that the Medication Use Processes meet or exceed requirements by regulating (DEA, FDA, Board of Pharmacy) and accrediting agencies (e.g., JCAHO).
  • Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
  • Evaluates needs of client and communicates findings to hospital and Cardinal Management.
  • Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.
  • Performs Fresh Eyes Assessment within one month of new assignment.
  • Informs client and Cardinal Management where opportunities are identified for operational, clinical and financial improvements.
  • Assures that direction is taken which supports the strategic plan for the pharmacy , mission, and goals of the organization.
  • Assume the responsibility when necessary of opening a new pharmacy management agreement./account per established Cardinal Health pharmacy management guidelines.
  • Implements and maintains programs that improve the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
  • Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Establishes productive collaborative relationships with physicians, nurses, department’s direct report (hospital administrator), and other hospital staff.
  • Provides educational programs to clinical staff.
  • Maintains current pharmacist licenses in assigned states. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends contact CE seminars which are required by specific states of licensure. Attends management meetings. Sustains professional competency and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars and professional organizations.
  • Obtains state licensure within four months of request.
  • Able to competently function on client systems (Computer, Clinical, Automation, etc.)
  • Perform staff pharmacist duties when critical need occurs.
  • Provides courteous, cooperative and timely service to patients, visitors, staff, administration, and business unit. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
  • Works cooperatively with hospital, pharmacy staff, and business unit. Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patients, guests and employee information.
  • Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire and infection control.
  • Adheres to hospital and Cardinal Health Technologies and Services (CTS) policies and procedures. Complies with all applicable Federal and State laws, rules and regulations, and regulatory standards (JCAHO, Medicare, HCFA, etc.)
Qualifications:
  • Pharmacy Degree, B.S. (advanced degree is encouraged: PharmD, MBA, MSHCA, etc).
  • Five to ten years hospital experience, with three to five years in a management position.
  • Pharmacy license in the state.
  • Proven customer service skills.
